Have you noticed that more people seem to mumble lately? The cashier at the grocery store in Kahului. Your friend across the table at lunch. Even your grandkids on a video call.
It is tempting to blame them. But when voices sound mumbled across many different people and places, the change is usually happening on the listening side, not the speaking side.
This simple self check can help you figure out whether your hearing may be part of the picture, and what to do next if it is.
Why Voices Can Sound Mumbled
Clear speech depends on catching all the small sounds inside words. Vowels are lower pitched and carry the loudness of speech. Consonants like s, f, th, sh, k, and t are higher pitched and softer, and they carry most of the meaning.
According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, age related hearing loss most often affects the ability to hear high pitched sounds first, and common symptoms include other people’s speech sounding mumbled or slurred.
That is the key. You can still hear the voice, because the vowels come through just fine. What fades are the consonants that make words crisp. The result sounds exactly like mumbling.
The Self Check: Do Any of These Sound Familiar?
Read through each group and count how many apply to you.

- You often say “What?” or “Huh?”
- Phone calls take more effort than they used to
Out and about
- Restaurants and busy stores make conversation difficult

- Women’s and children’s voices are harder to catch than men’s
How you feel
- You feel tired after social events
- You sometimes skip gatherings because keeping up is too much work
- You nod along even when you are not sure what was said
- You worry about answering the wrong question
What your score may mean
If you checked three or more, it is a good idea to have your hearing evaluated. That does not mean something is seriously wrong. It means you deserve clear answers about what you are experiencing.
Why Noise Makes It So Much Worse
Background sound covers the same soft consonants you may already be missing. Cleveland Clinic notes that people with age related hearing loss often have trouble understanding speech in noisy places, like crowded rooms and restaurants.
On Maui, that might be a busy restaurant in Paia, a family party in Wailuku, or a windy afternoon at the beach. These are often the first places people notice a change.
You Are Far From Alone
The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders estimates that about one in three adults ages 65 to 74 has hearing loss, and nearly half of those over 75. The World Health Organization reports that more than 25 percent of people over 60 are affected by disabling hearing loss.
Because it develops slowly, most people adjust little by little without realizing how much they are missing.
Quick Ways to Make Conversations Easier
- Sit facing the person you are talking with, in good light.
- Choose quieter tables, away from kitchens, bars, and speakers.
- Turn down music or the TV when someone is talking to you.
- Use captions on TV and video calls.
- Ask people to rephrase instead of repeating louder.
What Your Hearing Evaluation Includes
At Family Hearing Center on Maui, your hearing evaluation measures both what you hear and how well you understand speech. We will:
- Review your self check answers and talk about your daily life
- Examine your ears to rule out simple causes
- Test your hearing across a full range of pitches
- Check how clearly you understand words, in quiet and in background noise
- Explain your results and options in plain, easy terms
If hearing aids are recommended, modern devices can be programmed to bring back the specific high pitched sounds you are missing, so voices sound clearer, not just louder.
